Are you interested in film/porn making and BDSM? Then ‘Kink’ (2013) is the documentary for you

So, we’ve talked before about how the mainstream media doesn’t portray BDSM in an accurate light. (How does Hollywood Always get the BDSM Scene so Damn Wrong?!) But I’ve come across a documentary that was produced by James Franco that actually does! “Kink” is a documentary that follows the actors/actresses and the crew members of Kink.com and the way they make their porn films. I was sceptical at first. But this documentary not only shows the way these films are made, but they deal with the stigma associated with BDSM AND talk about aftercare and how they look after their talent. Don’t get me wrong, it’s kind of a long advert for kink.com, but I’m not mad at that. They seem to have a good, ethical way of working and creating their films.

The crew setting up for a scene

It’s hardcore but made for everyone

This film features some wonderful characters; from gorgeous porn stars to the equally gorgeous and warm, funny crew members. I really enjoyed this film. Not only does it show you hot BDSM film scenes being created, it also talks to the talent about their emotional responses to the scenes and how they find it affects their daily lives. This particular website caters to all forms of BDSM. We’re mainly shown scenes where there is a female submissive but there’s also a few scenes with an incredibly hot gay pair, and trust me, you’re going to want to see that! Phwoar!!!

Kink.com is not for the faint hearted! When I say they shoot BDSM films, they REALLY shoot hardcore BDSM films. For example, the documentary shows a scene where actress Lyla Storm is suspended, upside down in a harness. She is restrained and a vibrating “torture” device is lowered down between her legs and, wow! She is screaming but it looks pleasurable in the worst yet best way possible.

What I like about seeing this filmed is that they cut the scene a few times to check in with her. The skill of the director is to stop filming to check on her, but he does it in a dominant way. She responds by calling him Daddy, which she didn’t do before or after the shoot. This keeps her in the zone and in her subspace (which they describe in the film for those who haven’t read our article) but shows a level of care. Of course, she has a safe word which she can use at any time, but this is an extra level of care.

Danger with an element of care

BDSM, as we know, has such a taboo that comes with it. Part of that is what makes it hot! But we must ALWAYS remember to practice RACK and SSC. In one scene we see the director, Princess Donna, setting up a shoot. She discusses the plot with the talent. The female sub is meant to approach the front door when she hears the bell go. From behind a man puts a bag over her head (with an obvious hole for breathing) and then several other men come through the front door that she has just opened and they all gang bang her. This is a fantasy that a lot of people have and like to include in their roleplay. It sounds scary, and it is, but it’s the domination that’s hot. And the fact you know that it isn’t real makes it ok.

The care

What I was really impressed with is the fact that, despite having a bag over her head, Princess Donna can recognise that the female in the scene is not comfortable. The actress says she’s ok, but Princess Donna can tell she’s not fully relaxing and enjoying it. So, what does she do? She rescripts the whole scene is what she does!

She pulls another member of crew aside and says something along the lines of ‘This isn’t working, she’s uncomfortable and not enjoying it. Let’s change it up entirely. Instead of a home invasion scene, we’re going to change it to a scene where her boyfriend has his mates over and they all gang bang her.’ Did they still get a gang bang scene? Yes! Was the actress put into a scene where she had a lot more comfort and control because all of her senses knew what was going on? Also yes.

I just love this image. How relaxed crew get on a BDSM stage

What made it for me

I have to say my favourite character we met in this documentary was Tomcat. Tomcat is a male Trans porn actor and director. And my God! The way he runs a set, having studied film, is just amazing! Not only does he have complete control over how the shoot is going, what is needed, what camera angles etc. He also has such a way with the talent that I was blown away. I genuinely said to my partner that if I were to shoot porn like this, I would want Tomcat as the director. He was just so comforting and reassuring, but still kept the set sadistic in the most fun way. There were even some giggles between the actress and Tomcat.

In general, I loved the way the documentary portrayed the industry as tough. They talked to one star who came from a religious background and she said how her family have disowned her. The casting directors having calls with new talent in order to give them a ‘reality check’. This they know what they were getting themselves in to. They discuss aftercare; there’s shots of the Dom(me) figure embracing the sub after or the director telling them how wonderful they are to slowly bring them back to reality. But most of all they show how wonderful and not scary the world of BDSM is! It’s open to all, and everyone has their kink and we all should embrace that!

Seriously though, while watching this I learnt loads and both myself and my partner still got super turned on – so if you haven’t seen it yet, give it a watch!

Have you seen this documentary? What did you think?

  1. I LOVED this documentary!! It’s so rare they talk about the other elements of BDSM like aftercare. I think they did great.

  2. I felt while the documentary was great it was just a long advert for kink.com. especially for aspiring actors/actresses. Like “Come on and work for us we’ll treat you great. Oth r companies won’t”
