I’m always interested in learning about the different things that arouse humans. It’s fascinating. Sexuality is something that is so fluid and can take so many different forms. So, we’ve all heard of the term ‘tree hugger’. If you haven’t, where have you been hiding? It’s normally a term thrown around in a derogatory manner to describe environmentalists. But have you heard of ecosexuality? I hadn’t until I watched an episode of Slutever. (A great show made by Vice) I’m all for protecting the environment. But before watching the episode I thought it sounded bonkers. After watching it I grew more intrigued.
What is ecosexuality?
Ecosexuality is the concept of treating the Earth as your lover. This differs from the idea of ‘Mother Earth’. Part of this is because we all try to do the best for our lovers. Sometimes our poor mums get neglected. But we work hard to impress and be the best we can for our lovers. If you think of the Earth as your lover, you’re likely to treat the earth well. This includes recycling, considering better behaviours regarding the Earth, etc. But where does the sexuality side come into it? That’s where it gets interesting.
Ecosexuals get sexual pleasure from the feeling nature gives them. Madison Young, an ecosexual and performance artist, describes to Karley Sciortino (the presenter) the amazing energy and arousal she gets from the Earth. The Earth has energies that we can choose to embrace or ignore. The two describe the energy of a full moon and compare it to a giant sky vibrator. They talk about bathing naked in a lake under a full moon as an orgasmic experience. Karley also explores a session with Alexandra Roxo where they use the wind around them and think about the elements to achieve orgasm. This was particularly interesting because they were able to come to orgasm without physical touch between persons.
What I’ve learned
A lot of ecosexuality is about disconnecting from the world of technology that we surround ourselves with. It’s about putting down our phones and tablets and really feeling the Earth around us. Using our physical senses and harnessing that energy. It sounds so powerfully therapeutic to me. A lot of ecosexuality is about meditation and really embracing the sights, sounds, feel and smells of nature. What springs to mind for me, is the similarity to mindfulness. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that’s great for keeping us grounded and looking after our mental health. So, to me, ecosexuality is like mindfulness, mixed with environmentalism, with an orgasmic ending. Sounds fun! I think I’m going to give it a try the next time I get a quiet spot in the park.
